How Extra Place Matching Works
An each-way bet consists of two separate bets: one on the horse to Win, and one on the horse to Place. Bookmakers often run promotions paying extra places (for example, paying top 5 places instead of standard top 4).
By placing the each-way bet at the bookmaker and laying both the Win and Place markets on a betting exchange (such as Smarkets, Betfair, or Matchbook), you lock in a tiny qualifying cost (often under £1.00).
- If the horse finishes in the standard places (1st–4th): Your bookmaker bet pays out, and your exchange lay covers the payout. You absorb only the tiny qualifying cost.
- If the horse loses (6th+): Your exchange lays win, covering the lost bookmaker stake. You absorb only the tiny qualifying cost.
- If the horse lands in the Extra Place (5th): Both your bookmaker Place bet and your exchange Place lay win! You pocket the full bookmaker place return (often £25 to £60+) for a risk of under £1.
